Screenprint - Antwerp Dockyard Crane

Last week I screenprinted this image of a beautiful dockyard crane in Antwerp, Belgium, from a photo I took while I was there a year or so ago. The process was the same as the pylon screenprints - using just two silkscreens, one for the background and one for the structure itself. Again the registration was pretty tricky but I'm pretty happy with the result. More to come, watch this space...

Screenprinting pylons

I produced these two screenprints of electricity pylons last week.

I've long had a "thing" about pylons and the lattices and negative space within them, so thought it was about time I produced some prints of them. It was also an opportunity to experiment with "reduction screenprinting" (does such a thing/term/process exist?).

Each print was produced with six colours but only two silkscreens - I used small pieces of tape to mask off small areas before printing each new colour over the last. It meant having to work fast before the ink dried in the screens, and also involved some very tricky and precise registration. As usual I used a heavy sheet of clear acetate to register each new colour.

I only printed a very small number of each image so won't be selling these, but I'm pleased with the technique and have plans for similar prints involving other similar structures - dockyard cranes, bridges, gasometers etc.

2016 Calendar - split fountain screenprint

I screenprinted this 2016 calendar last week using the "split fountain" technique, my first attempt at the process. I won't detail the process here as there are plenty of tutorials and lessons online which explain it in plenty of detail, but it basically involves screenprinting two colours simultaneously, ideally creating a smooth transition/blend between them.

In the case of these calendars, I printed two versions - a cyan/magenta split fountain with a black overlay, and a red/green split fountain, some with a silver overlay and some with a black one. The calendars are printed on Fabriano Liscia 300gsm paper and measure 50x70cm.

Fundraising screenprint for StokeyLocal

I've just finishing screenprinting this 4 layer CMYK screenprint to help raise funds for Stoke Newington's Stokey Local campaign. It's a limited edition of 40 prints on 300g Fabriano paper, it measures 30x40cm and is available to buy for just £40.

CMYK halftone screenprint -Tom eating spaghetti

Yesterday I printed my first four colour (CMYK) halftone screenprint. I'm pretty happy with the result, particularly considering I printed it in my spare room with my home made exposure unit, and registered each colour using an acetate sheet. It was also quite a challenge making sure the screens were burned well enough to pick up all the halftones.

The image area is 22x27cm and individual colours are shown below as they were laid down.

Hackney DIY Art Fair - 31st August 2014

The Hackney Flea DIY Art Market took place on August 30th and 31st, in Abney Hall, just off Church Street in Stoke Newington London N16. It was the first time I'd taken a stall at an event like this, and I wasn't sure what to expect so I shared a table on the Sunday with market regular Caz of Beetle and Wilde.

All in all it was a very good day - a steady stream of visitors, some great feedback and a fair few sales (my smiling chicken head print in particular sold well). I also met some great people, including Hastings-based illustrator Georgia Sawers, and Julieta and David from Stokey-based Pixel Press letterpress studio. 

It was certainly worthwhile enough to make me think I'll do it again and probably take a table to myself next time to be able to display more of my screenprints. I'll post details here and on Twitter when I know when that might be...

In love with these Lovebirds

Just noticed on Twitter that SOMA Gallery has more of Tom Frost's beautiful hand printed Lovebirds in stock, and had to buy a pair. Screenprinting on wood always looks good and is something I'm meaning to get around to myself at some point soon.

Anyway, may end up buying a few of these as xmas presents...
